Review by Tavares S. Carney – Inspire, Motivate & Encourage
Wait For Love, You’ll Get Your Chance
This is the continuation of Kim Brooks’ He’s Fine But Is He Saved?, where friends Michelle, Liz and Sandy continue their quest for love. In He’s Saved But Is He For Real?, Brooks allows her readers to accompany these three women as they continue their respective searches for “the one.” Complicating matters in each of their respective searches, Michelle is in a relationship at the time “fine as ever” Pierre Dupree resurfaces, begging her back in his life after having duped her at the alter two years ago. Liz finds herself vulnerable and insecure in her new relationship; later finding that something from her past is withholding her from truly being able to love like God intended. Sandy is still falling for the same old tricks, not only does she continue hurting herself, she hurts those closest to her.
Michelle’s strength and obedience in this story is truly amazing. The character trait I liked most in Michelle was the supernatural ability to forgive after having been wronged by someone close to her. Liz confronts her past in order that she is released for her future and Sandy, well she’s still Sandy with a lot of growing to do. I think Brooks’ next novel in the series just may hold the answer to Sandy’s fate. With the help of friends and family, and obedience to God’s word, each of the ladies learn that she must let go and let God in finding true love.
Another point I’d like to mention is that while “ . . . Is He For Real?” is the continuation of “. . . Is He Saved?,” this book can stand alone for people like myself who did not read Brooks’ first release. I particularly liked Brooks’ writing style and the story progression. I’d definitely recommend this book and look forward to more from this author.
Book Description

It's been almost two years since Michelle Williamson's boyfriend, Pierre Dupree, walked out on her to marry a minister's daughter. Since then, Michelle's friendship with her church buddy David has deepened into something sweet and special, but learning that Pierre has called off his wedding throws her into confusion. When Pierre wants Michelle back, she's forced to make a choice—one she may regret.

Liz Coleman has two great blessings—her calling as a minister, and a saved man who truly loves her. But Liz's insecurity and jealousy are eating at her peace of mind and threatening her relationship.

Sandy has found the strength to get her ex out of her life. But meeting a loving, spiritual man to replace him isn't easy, and soon her loneliness leads her to the one brother who should be off-limits.

With their hearts and souls on the line, Michelle, Liz and Sandy are learning that a good, saved man isn't always easy to find—but he's definitely worth waiting for….

Pastor Eric Lambert discusses the 10 Attitudes for Victorious living in The Kneeling Mind – Acknowledging Christ; Studying the Word of God; Thanksgiving; Representing Christ; Prayer; Praise; Fellowship; Prosperity; Giving; Chasing God’s Heart and the “Final Attitude.” The book is written in a progressing fashion in order that one is informed how to develop and display appropriate Christian, Christ-like behaviors and ways of thinking during his or her spiritual journey. Beginning with the first attitude of acknowledging Christ, Pastor Lambert explains how one’s thinking patterns and thought processes will allow for total control of the physical according to God’s word. A mind submissive to God’s word will never mislead; thus, the kneeling mind. Pastor Lambert quotes scripture, gives real-life examples and is straight to the point. This book is easy to understand and a relatively fast read. This is a book to read again and again for inspiration, motivation and encouragement.

“Family, Friends and The Ex-Factor”

Meet Graham Peters, recently widowed husband of Amanda, to whom he was happily married for 40 years – also father to two adult daughters, Liz and Deborah, all of whom are coping with the sudden loss of an adoring wife and mother. Two months have passed since Amanda’s death and Graham finds himself still in the doldrums, unable to function at all. After narrowly escaping a suicide attempt, Graham finds himself cooped up in the house he shared with his now deceased wife, only to be constantly reminded of the love he feels he’s lost with all of her memory still in place – from family pictures, to the home’s décor and even Amanda’s apron still hanging up in the kitchen. Wallowing in sorrow and self-pity, Graham does not bathe, barely eats and never leaves the house for a time. Then enters his best friend, Charlie Ford, to help Graham pick up the pieces to what’s left of his life. An invitation to a local jazz club, The Water Hole, proves to be just that, Graham’s ticket out of his misery. Not the normal choice of environment to the man known as Deacon Peters at the big church on Market Street, The Water Hole eventually became Graham’s passageway to finding his new love – sultry, jazz singer, Ms. Rita Long.

Unbeknownst to Graham, his best friend, Charlie, has secretly admired Rita for quite some time but never had the galls to let it be known. This is where the plot thickens. Graham and Rita, after a short time, discover that there is such a thing as “love the second time around” - Graham, learning to live again after his wife’s death and Rita, letting her guard down after suffering a tumultuous relationship with ex-husband and NBA player, William Long.

When everyone gets wind of the rapidly-maturing relationship between the two, all hell breaks loose. Sister Mary Ross from the big church on Market Street practically throws herself at Graham, to no avail. His daughter, Deborah, refuses to give Rita even the slightest chance and his best friend, Charlie, has become outright jealous of his and Rita’s relationship. Rita’s ex-husband, the washed up NBA player, William Long, also has a few schemes up his sleeve. It seems as if everyone and anything that came against these two, did. Through strained relationships and other misfortunes, Graham and Rita learn that true love will sustain all things and prove the things which are really meant to be.

Suzetta Perkins does a great job with her descriptiveness and imagery. I’ve never been to Oakland but I felt like I was there while reading this book. I also felt the emotions of the characters all throughout. The storyline was very intriguing and some deep, dark secrets are revealed at the end. These revelations shed light on some of the things that transpire throughout the story and perhaps will give the reader a better understanding as to why some things were, including the main character, Mr. Graham Peters, himself. This novel deals with issues of death, parenthood, friendship and trust.

The Ups and Downs of Being Round is the coming-of-age story of little Madison, otherwise known as Miss Piggy since the day she first started school. This was the day Madison discovered it wasn’t cool to be the “fat” or the “big” kid. Wanting to be accepted and considered “normal,” Madison began working to get her body in order – exercising and dieting. Experiencing considerable weight loss, Madison is soon the center of attention and discovers what she calls “the new me.” She quickly learns that dropping the weight and keeping it off will require more than a temporary phase of exercise and diet. Madison eventually gains her weight back and discovers that weight loss may not be the key to acceptance, true friendship and happiness after all. When Madison finds the one true love that will accept her as-is, she makes a conscious decision to maintain a healthy lifestyle and keep the weight off. Will the attention she once had be the demise of her newfound love and relationship, or will she realize that genuine love “as she is” is better than having to hide her past? I recommend this book to anyone who has dealt with esteem issues relative to weight maintenance. It will also give readers an inside look of the emotions overweight individuals deal with and how society as a whole can be more supportive, focusing on health and inner happiness rather than "what other people think."

Book Description

“Never Say Never”

The Enemy Between My Legs is a first-person account of the author’s experiences with childhood sexual abuse and the emotional, physical and mental impact the abuse has had on her throughout the years. Having dealt with teenage promiscuity, Ms. Jones takes a no-holds barred approach in informing readers that it can happen to anyone, boys and girls, and that no age is too young. She explains to readers how the most seemingly innocent touches from those we trust most can very well be sexual advances and interpreted as sexual abuse. Alarmingly, the younger the victim, the harder it is to know the difference. Ms. Jones offers signs to look for in a person that may be experiencing sexual abuse and ways to offset and not perpetuate cycles of sexual abuse in families. She also explains how sharing her story and revealing the truth has helped her begin her healing process. Sharing her story has also enhanced her relationship with her husband. Readers will close this book giving second thought, if they don’t already, to whom they allow care for their children. Those who are in a relationship with someone who has been sexually abused will close the back cover with a new understanding of certain behaviors exuded by those once victimized.

Book Description

Have you ever been sexually abused? It's a simple, yet profound question. The answer is either yes or no. Unfortunately, for as many as one in three females and one in five males, the answer is yes. Sexual abuse is not bound by race, economic status, or social class. It strikes every family. Because of the hurt, shame, and embarrassment it brings to families, no one wants to talk about it. Do you think that it hasn't happened in your family? Think again! Have you or someone you know been sexually promiscuous? Are you feeling lonely, confused, or depressed and don't know why? Do you wonder if the person who abused you ever thinks about it? Do you have problems being intimate with your spouse? Before you send your child off to another babysitter... Before you let your child play Hide-and-Seek... Before you let your child spend the night anywhere else... Before you call another pregnant teen a fast little girl... Before you say, My husband would never touch my child... YOU MUST READ THE ENEMY BETWEEN MY LEGS!

“Umbrella with Holes”

Who would’ve ever guessed that Queen Esther and Bishop, heads of the prominent Clayton first-family, were hiding such deep familial secrets? Living publicly as the “perfect family,” over a period of time, their children Ruth and Ezra learn that being birthed into a first family does not necessarily guarantee “a covering” from everyday, worldly goings-on. Ruth soon discovers that the imaginary protective covering she had was due to an “at all costs” facade imposed by none other than her mother, Queen Esther, the only daughter of a prominent Chicago minister. The family pastoral legacy did not prepare Ruth and her brother Ezra for the emotional hurt and sometimes, physical trauma experienced as members of the Clayton first family. Keeping up appearances was Queen Esther’s primary concern. Turning her back on her son due to his indiscretions and coercing her granddaughter to cover a dark secret, Queen learns later in life how her impositions have hurt her family, gravely, including her own husband. Both Ruth and Ezra lean on each other to miraculously bring the Clayton family full circle based on basic premises of God’s word – compassion, truth and forgiveness. Readers will experience how one family overcomes the odds of falling apart having been faced with issues such as premarital sex, adoption, AIDS, false accusations, non-communication and extramarital affairs. Characters are appropriately developed and the plot offers several twists and turns, offering true-to-life scenarios. Readers will find themselves feeling the characters emotions, engulfed in the story and yearning to know how things turn out for the Clayton family.

Review by Tavares S. Carney – “the Christian Page Turner”
In The Big Payback, author, Cederick Tardy draws upon his personal life experiences and advises from his own perspective, and probably many more young males, single mothers on what it is he thinks are the methods and strategies to raise a successful young man. Having had to deal with childhood emotions he so candidly shares in this work, he gives mothers who may not have an open line of communication with their son insight into what may be going through the minds of their young man. He turns the looking glass to all mothers, making us painfully examine what it is we could actually be doing better to rear our sons and areas whereby we can use a little or a lot of improvement. He gives pointers regarding the signs and symbols mothers should look for in order that they are conscious of other forms of communication from their son’s besides verbal communication. The difference in what some are calling this “parenting manual” and a typical parenting manual from a seasoned psychologist, social worker or family counselor, is that it is advised from a youth perspective. While Cederick is quite appreciative of everything his mother thought she was doing right in providing for him, this work affords readers the true essence of what a son longs for from his mother, her time and attention, her ears and her heart. He teaches us all that material things come and go, but love and understanding surpasses all. A nurturing mother, with God’s assistance, is the best cultivator of a successful, well-rooted young man. Cederick is proof positive that any situation can be made positive when a firm foundation is laid and communication is honest and open. Those of us that are mothers, single or not, will close the final page of this book having gained at least one thing we can take with us and apply it to our daily lives. Plain and simple, he discusses real topics and suggests real solutions.
Book Description
Cederick Tardy shows you how to build trust, develop courage to overcome, interpret actions and body language, improve communication skills, understand your son’s thought processes, plan your son’s future, understand his father’s significance, win arguments without ruing relationships and much more. The Big Payback will open your eyes as a single mother and give you greater insight into what you should or shouldn’t be doing as a parent to garner your son’s success.

Review by Tavares S. Carney – “the Christian Page Turner”
From beginning to end, the author of Sinful, arouses reader anticipation in yearning to know what each character will do next. First there’s trouble-making and bitten-by-the-jealous bug, cousin Dior, who resents the fact that her cousin Chandelle has everything she wishes she could have and more, legitimately. This includes a husband, a big house and a nice car. Readers are acquainted with Dior’s web of deception that leads to the demise of her cousin’s marriage to a humble, loving husband. After a terrible misunderstanding that lands Marvin, Chandelle’s husband, in jail, everything starts to unravel in their lives. Both Chandelle and Marvin, although suffering through the pain of thoughts and feelings of ungratefulness, bitterness, jealousy, greed, infidelity and more, never lose their love for each other and with God’s influence, are led back into each others arms. This book is a very good read and is proof positive that no matter what, there is always hope for a mended relationship when God is in the picture.

Book Description
From acclaimed author Victor McGlothin comes an absorbing, inspirational tale about the high cost of greed--and the miracle of redemption--as a married couple find themselves caught up in a very pricey love triangle... Everybody's got a weakness and Chandelle Hutchins' is a love of material possessions--a love that is causing serious trouble in her marriage. Chandelle's latest object of desire is an expensive new house. Her husband Marvin knows they can't afford it--and he also knows he can't talk Chandelle into giving it up. With their relationship crumbling under a mountain of debt, it may just be easier for Marvin to walk away. But with Chandelle's scheming cousin Dior in town, money may be the least of the couple's problems... Dior's weakness is her insatiable appetite for causing trouble--and her latest target is her cousin's marriage. When the time is right, Dior would like nothing more than to seduce Marvin on the rebound. But Dior is being trailed by her own troublemaker: a crazed female employer who refuses to release Dior from her twisted duties as nanny to her children and late night mistress to her kinky husband. Fortunately for everyone involved, the Lord works in mysterious ways. For despite a tangle of lies, manipulation, and mayhem, a series of unexpected events is about to bless everyone with a much needed second chance.
